Air filter replacement guide
How often, which MERV rating, and why the most expensive filter can make things worse.
A one-inch filter typically needs replacing every one to three months; thicker media filters can run six months to a year. Pets, allergies, and construction dust all shorten the interval.
MERV rates how much a filter captures. Higher is not automatically better: a very high-MERV filter in a system not designed for it restricts airflow, which reduces capacity, strains the blower, and can freeze a coil. For most residential systems a mid-range MERV is the right balance of filtration and airflow.
Check the airflow arrow on the frame and point it toward the blower. A filter installed backwards still filters, but less effectively and with more resistance. If you cannot remember when you last changed it, that is the answer.

Improve winter indoor air quality
Why sealed-up winter houses get stuffy, dry, and dusty — and what actually helps.
Winter air quality problems come from the same cause as winter comfort problems: the house is closed up. Cooking, cleaning, and everyday living release contaminants that no longer have anywhere to go, and heated air holds less moisture.
Dry air is the most noticeable symptom — static shocks, cracked lips, irritated sinuses, and shrinking wood trim. Whole-home humidification adds moisture at the equipment rather than one room at a time. Aim for roughly 30-50% relative humidity; higher invites condensation and mold on cold surfaces.
For contaminants, the order of operations is control the source, then ventilate, then filter. Better filtration helps with particulates. Air purification and UV products address different problems — biological growth inside the equipment versus airborne particles — so it is worth being specific about which problem you are solving before buying either.

Humidity and comfort
The reason two houses at the same temperature can feel completely different.
Humidity determines how effectively your body sheds heat by evaporation. High indoor humidity in summer means sweat evaporates slowly and the house feels warmer and stickier than the thermostat suggests. Low humidity in winter accelerates evaporation and makes the house feel colder than it is.
Cooling equipment dehumidifies as a side effect of cooling, but only while it runs. An oversized system satisfies the thermostat quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough to pull much moisture out — which is why an oversized system can leave a house cold and clammy at the same time.
That is the practical case for correct sizing and for two-stage or variable-speed equipment: longer, gentler run cycles remove more moisture and hold a steadier temperature, which is what actually reads as comfort.
